“The dream clung to her. Her sleep had been full of Jupiter ever since the survey last week: that overwhelming, unstoppable girth; the swirling patterns of the atmosphere, dark belts and light stripes rolling in circular rivers of ammonia crystal clouds; every shade of orange in the spectrum, from soft, sand-coloured regions to vivid streams of molten vermilion; the breathtaking speed of a ten-hour orbit, whipping around and around the planet like a spinning top; the opaque surface, simmering and roaring in century-old tempests. And the moons! The ancient, pockmarked skin of Callisto and the icy crust of Ganymede. The rusty cracks of Europa’s subterranean oceans. The volcanoes of Io, magma fireworks leaping up from the surface.”
- Lily Brooks-Dalton, Good Morning, Midnight
Music for space journeys right in your mind:
This is absolutely normal situation for me: for the first time after a long break to see Jupiter high in the sky and, saying "Hello", to start crying...
How beautiful you are... You shine like a jewel on the blue velvet of the sky, illuminated by the incredible colors of a dying sunset, constantly changing, flowing from blue-green to scarlet-golden, merging into soft dim mist at the the horizon line, gradually dissipating to open the way for a clean shine of the star lights.
Have you ever been able to admire the sky in those rare moments when it glowing with an unearthly turquoise light above the horizon? And today I've suddenly realized that twilight sky looks so similar to the inverted ocean... First, a transparent turquoise water surface, illuminated by the golden sun, flowing to the saturated shades of blue and finally, deep down, further to unknown, water grows darker into deeper and deeper shades of night.
And I just can't help myself... I just stand and look up at this infinite beauty, turning my gaze to the greatest of the planets, trying to carry myself away for many light years in my mind. Remembering this incredible feeling - to see that you are not just a shining point in the sky, but something majestic, unexplored and incomprehensible.
And we will never be able to touch you. Only look silently, with a secret heart and a fluttering soul... And I will gaze at you silently... Until you disappear in the haze of the horizon, forever remaining in my memories and my heart.
